Sailor's Delight

As you enter downtown Harbor Springs, it’s hard to miss this striking cottage perched on the site of a former inn, with sweeping views of Little Traverse Bay. The homeowners—a Chicago-based couple with a lifelong love of sailing—had spent many summers in the area. When this rare lakefront property became available, they saw the opportunity to build their forever home.

Cottage Company Fine Builders, in partnership with Cottage Company Interiors, collaborated closely with the clients and architect to create a residence that feels both timeless and deeply personal. Designed as a year-round retreat for the couple and their chocolate labs, the home also comfortably accommodates guests with four en-suite bedrooms and a luxurious primary suite.

Throughout the home, thoughtful features reflect the couple’s lifestyle: a custom chef’s kitchen, morning coffee stations, multiple laundry areas, private entrances, and even an elevator connecting the lower level to a rooftop deck. One standout architectural detail is the reclaimed timber beam that spans the first-floor ceiling. After an extensive search for the right-sized beam—locally sourced from Emmet County—we partnered with a local wood supplier to prepare the wood before carefully installing it, adding warmth, history, and character to the heart of the home.
