Lakeside Lovely

This lakefront home holds a special place in our hearts—it was designed and built by Cottage Company founders Rob and Vee Mossburg as their personal retreat. Set on a breathtaking, once-undeveloped stretch of Lake Michigan shoreline, the property spans four custom structures and a quarter mile of lake frontage, all carefully connected by design.

The land presented a unique challenge: steep slopes, dense native trees, and no clear access to the water. Locals had long admired it but couldn’t imagine how to build there. Rob’s father had a simple suggestion—follow the path of the deer. That instinctive advice shaped the route we ultimately carved through the trees.

The site was once a Native American hunting camp, so we approached the project with sensitivity to its history and a commitment to coastal preservation. We worked with local officials to secure a permanent conservation easement to protect the area from future development and preserve the beloved “Tunnel of Trees” that leads into Harbor Springs.

Inside the home, every detail was designed to reflect quality and craftsmanship, including a dramatic floating staircase with no central support — a structural feat that had to be built into the house from the start and still stands beautifully today.

This project represents everything we value: bold vision, deep respect for the landscape, and design that endures. It’s not just a home — it’s a story written into the land.
