Beach House Blues
Nestled in Menonaqua, a historic vacation community in Harbor Springs, this serene waterfront cottage was designed for a couple from New York, who envisioned a peaceful gathering place they would return to year after year. The result is a cottage that blends classic architecture with elements inspired by the landscape with focus on natural materials—cedar shake shingles, a river rock fireplace, and generous porches.
The home’s site, dotted with natural springs and flanked by forest, beach, and protected dunes, required having to transport all materials by hand across a narrow bridge—a challenge our construction team handled expertly. The palette is inspired by the surrounding landscape—sandy neutrals, lake blues, leafy greens—bringing warmth and cohesion to the space.
The home’s interiors are full of thoughtful details that evoke a sense of place. Paneling, beadboard ceilings, and coffered treatments add architectural depth. Performance fabrics, a hardwood floor that hides wear, and casually comfortable furniture—designed for coastal living by Kelly Konoske—reflect the casual elegance of cottage life. A standout blue Calcutta marble island anchors the kitchen, while statement textiles and custom millwork make each room feel inviting yet polished.
From the primary bedroom’s panoramic views to cheerful wallpaper in the powder room, every design choice echoes a deep love for lakeside summers and family connection. For this busy urban couple, the cottage is more than a summer retreat—it’s a legacy of rest, reflection, and refined coastal living.
